We all encounter illness in life. When we visualize what that’s like, most of us think of lying in bed with a fever or perhaps checking into a hospital for surgery. Many of us do not think of illness in the mental sense, but we should, as that’s just as dangerous and debilitating as a lot of physical diseases. When we are ill, we cannot function, and when it comes to Mississippi mental health overall, far too many people are struggling mightily just to get through the day. That needs to change, and it all starts with one person at a time.
SoCal Empowered is an organization providing residential mental health treatment for people from all over the United States and other parts of the world. We have facilities in Orange County, California and in Idaho Falls, Idaho. While we are not located in The Magnolia State, we’ve found that for a lot of people, getting away from home to focus on mental health treatment can be advantageous as compared to staying local.
If you’re sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, or if you’re concerned about the status of a loved one, we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible. We’ll help you find the right resource for your needs, whether that includes our team of mental health professionals or not. In order to put some of this into perspective, we’re going to lay out some extremely troubling data with respect to Mississippi mental health below.
Mississippi Mental Health Statistics
We have several informational resources to highlight that relate to the state of Mississippi mental health. The first comes from the state government, specifically the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, or the DMH. The DMH recently published its 988 Study Commission Report, which focused on data relating to suicide and other serious problems that exist in the state.
Below are just a few data points to consider:
- 431,000 adults in Mississippi have a diagnosable mental illness at any given time.
- 120,000 adults have what’s known as a “serious” mental illness, or an illness so severe that it prevents people from living everyday life without interruption.
- 107,000 adults in Mississippi considered taking their own lives in the past year.
- 421 people lost their lives via suicide during the previous year, or more than one person per day.
- The 988 Suicide Hotline answered 13,549 calls in the fiscal year 2023 in Mississippi. That’s an increase of approximately 20 percent when compared to 2022.
As you can see, thousands of people are in serious need of Mississippi mental health treatment. While many are reaching out for it, that number is far from 100 percent. To that point, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, also publishes data relating to mental illness in the United States. In its breakdown of Mississippi, a NAMI report stated that 2,375,345 people in Mississippi live in a community that does not have enough mental health professionals.
A Statistical Comparison
To look at the numbers relating to Mississippi mental health, it’s possible to simply see them as numbers and nothing more without context. The reality of the situation, however, is that it’s highly likely that either you are struggling with a mental illness or someone you love is facing this situation. Broken down further, we’re going to list the 10 most populous cities in Mississippi in descending order below:
- Jackson – 143,709
- Gulfport – 72,823
- Southaven – 56,851
- Hattiesburg – 48,414
- Biloxi – 48,235
- Olive Branch – 47,029
- Tupelo – 37,675
- Meridian – 33,551
- Pearl – 28,117
- Madison – 27,987

Overall, there are just under 2.3 million adults living in Mississippi. When comparing the population data to the Mississippi mental health statistics, you find the following:
- More adults in Mississippi have a mental illness (431,000) than there are people in the populations of Jackson, Gulfport, Southaven, Hattiesburg, Biloxi and Olive Branch combined (417,061).
- If all of the adults in Mississippi with a serious mental illness moved into one community, it would immediately become the second largest city in the state.
- The same would hold true if everyone who experienced suicidal ideation in the previous year moved into one community.
- There are more people in Mississippi living in communities underserved by mental health professionals than there are adults in Mississippi overall.
Mississippi Mental Health Rankings
Finally, to put these statistics into further perspective, we’re going to lay out an analysis that Mental Health America, or MHA, publishes annually. This analysis ranks the status of mental health and mental illness treatment by state. The organization uses the following criteria to determine overall rankings:
- Adults with Any Mental Illness (AMI)
- Adults with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in the Past Year
- Adults with Serious Thoughts of Suicide
- Adults with SUD Who Needed But Did Not Receive Treatment
- Adults with AMI Who are Uninsured
- Adults Reporting 14+ Mentally Unhealthy Days a Month Who Could Not See a Doctor Due to Costs
- Adults with AMI with Private Insurance That Did Not Cover Mental or Emotional Problems
Based on the criteria above, Mississippi finished 45th out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. You can find the full report here.
